Here are some definitions to broaden you soccer
vocabulary. If you would like to add a definition use the form at the
bottom of the page.
1-2 - Basically, a give-and-go
or wall pass.
ambitious ball - An overly aggressive pass which had little chance of
success.
and again - To pass the ball to a teammate, run around a defender,
and the teammate returns the ball.
back door - The furthest goalpost from the ball.
carry - Tells the player with they ball they have time to
dribble forward
challenge - To "challenge" the player with the ball.
clear or clearance - Usually used in defensive 1/3 of field. To play
the ball out of the area taking away the opponents
chances of offense.
cross - Pass or kick the ball across the mouth of the opponent's goal.
dispossess - To take the ball away from an opponent who had control
of the ball.
drop - To pass the ball back to a supporting player.
drop and mark - The defending team needs to move to their goal,
picking up and marking opponents.
dummy - To let the ball go past or through your legs to a teammate.
far post - The goal post furthest from the ball.
finish - When a player shoots the ball into the goal.
first time - shoot or pass the ball with the first touch.
give-and-go - To pass the ball to a teammate, run past the defender
and the teammate returns the ball.
give him an oscar - When players fake injury in order to get a foul
called.
goal side - The defender positioned between the goal and the
offensive player.
hard tackle - A fair, but rough tackle.
he took the man not the ball - When a player deliberately takes out
the opponent and not going for the ball.
keeper - Yelled out by the goalkeeper to call for the ball so
teammates will move out of the way.
jockey - Used to tell teammate to delay an attacker until
defensive support arrives
late tackle - A tackle after the ball was played by the offensive
player. Should result in a foul.
man on - An opponent is approaching the player with the ball from
behind.
man to man marking – Following a player wherever they go on the
field.
mark up - Telling your teammates to leave no one un attended.
near post - The goal post nearest the ball.
nutmeg - To put the ball between an opponent's legs.
off the line - Referring to the goalkeeper moving from from the goal
line.
pace - Referring to speed of the ball from a pass.
pitch – Another name for the playing field.
pk - A penalty kick.
play around them - To switch the ball from one side of the field to
another with a succession of passes.
professional foul - A deliberate foul calculated to obtain an
advantage such as intimidation of the
opposition, or prevention of a subsequent opportunity.
show - Move from a position with an intervening defender to a
position with a clear line to the ball.
skip - Let it run to another player.
split - To pass the ball between two defenders.
square pass - To serve the ball to an overlapping teammate at a
90-degree angle.
sweeper - The player positioned behind the fullbacks and in front of
the goalie who has the authority to play
either the right, middle or left side of the field (hence sweeps)to block the
opposing team's shot or
player.
switch - Means to switch the point of attack (switch the ball from
the right side of the field to the left).
tackle - When a player uses their feet or shoulders to take the
ball away from an opponent.
time - Having enough time to look up and move the ball, (no close
opponent.)
through pass, ball - To serve the ball through a flat defensive
alignment into a forward space. Thus, creating
opportunity on the goal.
turn - Telling your teammate they have time to control the ball and
turn up field.
turn and face - Turn around and get ready for the kick.
unlucky - A nice short way of saying, "That wasn't your fault,
just bad luck" most players will understand, can be
applied in almost any situation where someone commits a foul, kicks the ball out
of bounds on
accident, etc.
volley - A kick made while the ball is in the air.
wall - The players who stand between the ball and their own goal at the time a free kick is going to be taken.
wall pass - To pass the ball to a teammate, run past the defender,
and the teammate returns the ball.
